I think I have too much digital life.
Some know that my profession is in the online world. I was looking at my Tumblr just now and saw I hadn’t posted since Nov 09 and a wave of failure came across me. What person of any digital caliber, who makes influential decisions for web properties, can in their right mind not keep up with their Tumblr? Then it hit me, who can blame me? With 140 characters to keep my friends immediately in the loop on top of a half a dozen lost cows in Facebook games and now checking in like a nomad at places on Foursquare - who has the time? Alas, I have started to think it is all just a poor mans burden to avoid any real conversations in the world. It is the old adage “look busy” and people will think you are up to something.
For me that something is usually I am up to no good but I am hopeful that this time all will change. Maybe that consistency factor I find lacking through my blog writing years is finally about to turn the proverbial corner. Optimism is in my blood! So onward with a tweet, Tumblr post, check-in and status update. If I master juggling those things on top of the real work I am paid for then I will join the ranks of the digital savants.
Having said that, I also know myself well enough to realize that I am really OK with a haphazard digital life. Maybe someday I will update daily, hourly, or every thirty seconds like some that I know. Until then let’s all grab a drink at some point and then ignore each other while we blackberry and iPhone the night away- because nothing says “You’re important to me” than posting it in some digital repository for public consumption when I am sitting 5 feet in front of you.
